Chapter 19

Summer Break

By the time summer rolled around, Julie and her father had planned the trip to the cabin down to the smallest of details. Joel would be with his dad for a month. Julie put in for her two-week vacation. Ash loaned the camper to Julie. Julie rented a small trailer to pull behind the camper. She would strap in boxes or buckets on the trailer.

What to pack? Julie knew that if they ever needed to stay a winter at the cabin, they needed warm clothes for a freezing Rocky Mountain winter. Her winter clothes for Oregon — layering a couple of sweatshirts — wouldn’t cut it in Colorado. They would need sub-freezing, even sub-zero, winter wear. This would mean boots, coats, gloves, and hats. These cost a fortune at normal outdoor stores.

Julie did some digging. Since it was spring time, many of these items were on clearance. Even clearance prices at outdoor stores were out of the question with her budget. Julie went to the discount stores and used clothing stores Ash recommended. Ash got her retro Goth clothes there, but those stores had boots, coats, gloves, and hats. They even had thick flannel sheets. Even though they were a fraction of full price, these items put a pretty big dent in Julie’s monthly prepping budget. But, warm clothes were a must for the cabin.

Julie went online and found army surplus wool blankets. Those were golden. Not only were they warm, they were incredibly durable. She also found wool-lined surplus jackets, wool glove liners, and wool liners for boots. Army surplus was great. It reminded her of the days working at the surplus store. She regretted not grabbing more of those items when she worked there, but she had no idea fifteen years ago that this was in her future. Back then she assumed she’d have a normal suburban life, so why would she need Army surplus stuff?

All the clothing and blanket items were vacuum sealed in large Space Saver bags. They would be worthless if they got wet and were stored that way.

She went into her basement and selected the items to go to the cabin. She took her time and really thought about what should go there. The items had to be necessary for life at the cabin and had to be easy to store.

The main things she’d bring to the cabin were emergency housewares, like sleeping bags, extra sheets, towels, and blankets, and a spare set of cookware. She added extra tools and fishing gear that she had picked up at garage sales.

She’d fill in any remaining space in the camper and trailer with five-gallon buckets of staples like beans and rice, and flour mixes. She also put in tubs of canned good and vacuum sealed pre-made meals. She had a whole tub of spices, which would be invaluable. She put in a few cans of ammunition.

But the main purpose of this trip was to stock the cabin with household items. Having them pre-positioned would free up space in subsequent trips — or, more importantly, during a bug out — to bring food.
